Welcome to Salem, Missouri!

Salem is located in south central Missouri in the Ozark Mountains. It is surrounded by State and National Parks and Forests and rightfully called the “Gateway to the Big Springs Country”. State highways 19, 32,72 and 68 all lead into Salem and it is just 120 miles southwest of St. Louis.

“Gateway to the Big Springs Country” means water in many forms. There is swimming, canoeing, camping and fishing on the Current, Meramec and Jack’s Fork Rivers. Seasonal rainbow trout fishing in Montauk and Meramec State Parks is unsurpassed. The woodland of the parks and hills are mostly hardwood and are alive with white-tail deer, wild turkey, rabbits, quail, squirrels and a multitude of songbirds.

Water and outdoor activities are just part of what Salem offers the visitor. The new Commons Complex is used for rodeo’s, horse shows, festivals and many other activities with camping facilities available here. Art and craft shows are held throughout the year at the twelve acre Bonebrake Nature and History Center located just a couple of block from the historic courthouse on the square. All summer long we have country auctions where one can buy treasures, find nostalgia free and be enriched by the warmth of the sun and the people who are glad you came.

Fall comes to the Ozarks and the hardwoods prove once again that there is no more beautiful place than right here. Salem enjoys remembering its past, living its present, planning its future and welcoming those who come to rest and refresh themselves.

We know that comfort and efficiency are also necessary to the smoothness of living. So underneath and very quietly we are very efficient in supplying the needs of modern living. We have three motels located at the major highways, four banks, several restaurants and national fast food chains, twice weekly local newspaper, two radio stations, thriving downtown area and Wal-Mart Supercenter. Salem has 911 emergency service, a modern hospital with 24 hour emergency room coverage, several private medical clinics, two nursing homes and a residential care center to contribute to the health and safety for those who need them.

Salem has an educational system equal to the best in the state, maintaining the respected AAA rating in all departments. For higher education there is Southwest Baptist University Salem Center which offers three semesters, summer, spring and fall and University of Missouri at Rolla campus is just 30 minutes away. Salem TCRC (Telecommunication Community Resource Center) is one of nine statewide distance-learning facilities and educational resources that allow people to communicate and exchange information throughout Missouri, the United States and the world. There are computers for the public to access the World Wide Web free of charge.
